White men make up approximately 31 percent of the population. However, a recent report on Sunday talks shows found that they constitute up to 75% of the guests. The OpEd Project uncovered similar findings in our “Who Narrates the World? 2012 Byline Report.”
For instance, only 22% of the op-eds in the New York Times in 2011 were written by women. The Wall Street Journal had even fewer at 19%.
That’s why we’re heartened to hear that Melissa Harris-Perry’s show defies this trend with less than 30% of the guests being white men.
Kudos to Harris-Perry’s show for not only pushing for diversity, but also for enriching the public conversation by allowing a variety of voices to be heard in the media. The Huffington Post article with the full story is here.
